Characters of the Return

What do the various scriptures tell us about the characters who return in the End Times?

There are various scriptures and sayings of the Prophets and Imams PBUT that refer to the return of well known characters that return to support the saviour of mankind.

From the Ahadith of the Ahlulbayt PBUT

The people reject the Return of souls

“Sereen, a companion, said: I was at Abu Abdullah’s, when he (as) said to me,

“What do the people say about this verse:

{And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that Allah will not resurrect one who dies} [Holy Qur’an 16:38]?”

So I said to him (as): They say there is no day of Resurrection and there is no day of judgment and there is no day of gathering.”

Have you not seen that they swore by Allah their strongest oaths?! The polytheists used to glorify Al-Lat and Al-Uzza so much that they would not swear by other than them!

So Allah said, “Rather, it is a true promise binding upon Him that He may make clear to them that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars. Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, “Be,” and it is.}

[Holy Qur’an 16:38, 39, 40]”

some pure believers who return with the Qai’m as mentioned in the ahadith

Imam al Sadiq (as) said: “Al-Qaim pbuh will come forth from the back of Kufa with twenty seven persons, fifteen from them are from the people of Musa (Moses) (as), who guided to the truth and acted according to Justice, and seven are from the people of the Cave and Joshua ibn Nun, and Salman and Abu Dujana Al-Ansari and Meqdad and Malik Al-Ashtar are present too, who will become Ansar and Rulers between the hands of the Qaim (as).”

Al-Irshad, Sheikh Al-Mufid, 2nd ed., v.2, p.386

Mufaddal returns with the Qai’m pbuh

Imam As-Sadiq said to Mufaddal: “O’ Mufaddal, you along with forty four other men, will be with the Qa’im pbuh. You will be on the right side of the Qaim (as) commanding and forbidding, and the people at that time are more obedient to you than they are today.”

The dead return to the physical world

Sheikh Al-Mufeed says: “The information we received mentions signs of the age of the appearance of the Qaim Al-Mahdi (pbuh) and events that will take place before his emergence of signs and proofs, and one of them is the emergence of the Sufyani […] and the dead will spread from the graves until they return to the physical world and they will get to know one another and they will visit one another […] and they will know then about his emergence in Mecca, so they will approach him to give him victory.”

Al-Irshad, Sheikh Al-Mufid, 2nd ed., v.2, p.368-370.

The people of truth are victorious during the rise of the Mahdi pbuh

Sheikh Al-Mufeed said: “About the return: and I say: That Allah (swt) revives people from the dead to the living in the image they were on, and He cherishes some of them and He humiliates some of them and the people of truth will triumph over the people of falsehood and the oppressed ones of them over the oppressors, and that is during the rise of the Mahdi of the progeny of Muhammed (sawas).”

the return of ismail the son of Imam As-Sadiq pbuh

Abu Khadijah said that Imam as-Sadiq (as) said: “I asked God to keep (my son) Isma‘il alive after me but He did not grant it, but granted him another station. He will be the first person to reappear along with his ten companions. Abdullah ibn Sharik will be his standard-bearer and one of his ten companions.”

the return of righteous women from the Prophesied 50 women

From Mufadhal ibn Umar said, I heard Aba Abd Allaah (as) say:
“13 women will be with Al-Qaim (as).” And I said: What will do? He (as) said: “They will treat the wounded and take care of the sick like (the women) did with the Messenger of Allaah (sawas).” I said: “Can you name them for me?” He (as) said:
1.) Al-Qanwa bin Rasheed
2.) Umm Ayman
3.) Habaabah ak-Waalibiyyah (Some say she is the companion of the 2nd Imam, some say she was the companion of the 2-5, some say she was the companion of all the first 8 Imams, and Imam Al-Rida burried her with his own shirt, she was 240 years old. (see: al-Mamaqaani, Tanqeeh al-Maqaal, vol. 23, pg. 75))
4.) Sumayyah, mother of Ammaar bin Yaasir
5.) Zabaydah (wife of Haroon al-Rasheed, the Abbasid caliph)
6.) Umm Khaalid al-Hamasiyyah
7.) Umm Saeef al-Hanafiyyah
8.) Sabaanah (Siyaanah) al-Maashetah (wife of Ezekiel others say female hairdresser for family of Pharao)
9.) Umm Khaalid al-Juhniyyah”

the return of ismail, son of ezekiel, with Imam Husain pbuh

Burayd Al-Ijli narrated:

I said to Abu Abdullah (as), “O son of the Messenger of Allah (sawas), inform me of Isma’il whom Allah mentioned in His book where He says:

{And mention in the Book, Isma’il. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.} [Holy Qur’an 19:54].

Was he Isma’il son of Ibrahim (as)? The people claim that he is Isma’il son of Ibrahim”.

So he (as) said: “Isma’il died before Ibrahim, and indeed Ibrahim was a Hujjah of Allah and a Qa’im (a Riser) and a companion of a Jurisprudence, so to whom would Isma’il be sent then?”

So I said: “Then who is Isma’il mentioned in the verse, may I be your ransom?”

So he (as) said:

“The one mentioned in the verse is Isma’il, son of the Prophet Ezekiel (as). Allah sent him to his people, but they belied him, killed him, and they flayed the skin off his face. So Allah was angered for him against them. So Allah sent to Isma’il the angel Satata’eel, who is the angel of Punishment, so the angel said to Isma’il, “O Isma’il, I am Satata’eel, the angel of punishment. The Lord of Glory has sent me to you, in order to punish your people by the types of punishment as you will”. So Isma’il said to him: “I do not have a need in this, O Satata’eel.”

So Allah inspired to him: “So what is your need, O Isma’il?”

So Isma’il said:

“O Lord, You have taken the covenant of Lordship to Yourself, and of Prophethood to Muhammad, and of Wilayah to his Vicegerents, and You have informed your creation of what his nation will do to Al-Hussain son of Ali peace be upon them after their Prophet, and You have promised Al-Hussain that You will return him to this world so that he may take revenge by himself from those who did that to him. So my need from You O Lord is that you return me to this world, so that I may take revenge from those who did that to me, as You will return Al-Hussain.”

So Allah promised that to Isma’il son of Ezekiel, so he returns with Al-Hussain son of Ali, peace be upon them.”

“How amazing it is, that dead people will be resurrected alive by Allah, time after time…”

Abu Hamza Al-Thimali narrated that Abu Ja’far (as) said in a Hadith about the Raj’a: “…so how amazing it is that dead people will be resurrected alive by Allah, time after time, while they had carried their swords, striking with them the heads of the tyrants/oppressors and their followers. Until Allah fulfills what He has promised them…” – Mukhtasar alBasa’ir 120/99 – Door of “The Rounds”

The return of the believers

Muhammad ibn Al-Tayyar said that Abu Abdullah (as) said regarding the verse {And the Day when We will gather from every nation a group} [Holy Qur’an 27:83]: “None of the believers were killed except that they return so that they die, and none of the believers died except that they return so they be killed.” – Bihar Al-Anwar page 40 volume 53

The matter of believing souls returning to support the Qa’im PBUH

Asem ibn Humayd narrated that Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (as) said:

“The Commander of the Believers (as) said:
Verily Allah The Blessed The Exalted, the One, The Indivisible, He made Himself singular in His oneness, then He spoke a word, so it became a light, then He created Muhammad sawas from that light […] so how amazing! And how could I not be amazed from dead people whom Allah will resurrect alive, they will respond, one group after another group, with the response “at your service, at your service, O Caller of Allah!”

They will walk in the paths of Kufa, carrying their swords on their shoulders, in order to strike with them the heads of the tyrants/oppressors and their followers, from the tyrants/oppressors of the first ones and the last ones! Until Allah fulfills what He has promised them in His (swt) saying:

{Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them Successorship upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them, and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has preferred for them, and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me} [Holy Qur’an 24:55].

Meaning worship Me while feeling safe, they do not fear anyone from my servants, they do not have Taqiyyah.

And verily,  for me is the round after the round, and the Raj’a (the return) after the Raj’a, and I am the companion/owner of the Raj’as and the Rounds.”

– Al-Bihar v53 p47 door 29 hadith 20; Mukhtasar Basa’ir alDarajat p32-33

the supporters in the Qa’im pbuh will keep being born

So Jabir said: O my master, where will those ones be?

So he (as) said: “O Jabir, they will be in the backs of their fathers until the known time (the time of the Qaim (as)), so they will move from the pure loins to the purified wombs… [until he said]… O Jabir, how will you be when the Naqous shouts, [and he pointed to Al-Hussayn (as)], and his light illuminates between his eyes, so he comes forth by his time, with a long longing/ yearning, he shall shake [the Earth] and make it collapse, and the believers will be with him from everywhere.

By Allah, if I willed, I would name them one by one by their names and the names of their fathers, for they will keep being born from the loins of men and the wombs of women, until the day of the known time!”

The raj’a is not the day of resurrection

From Muthannah Al-Hannat, from J’afar ibn Muhammad, from his father peace be upon them both, that he (as) said: “The Days of Allah the Almighty are three, the day the Qa’im rises, and the day of the Return (the Raj’a), and the Day of Resurrection.” – Ma’ani al-Akhbar by Sheikh al-Sadooq p 366

Imam Al-Sadiq (as) said: “What do the people say regarding this verse? {And the Day when We will gather from every nation a group …} (Holy Quran 27:83) So I said: “They say it is about the Day of Resurrection.” So he (as) said: “It is not like they say, rather indeed it is about the Raj’a (the Return). Would Allah gather on the Day of the Resurrection one group from every nation and leave the rest?! As for the verse of the Day of Resurrection then this is the following: {And we will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone} (Holy Quran 18:47-48) – Mukhtasar Basir Al-Darajat p41-42

The Commander of the Believers and the Imams after him return to this world

It is narrated on the commentary of the verses: {And on the day when We will gather from every nation a group from among those who rejected Our Signs, then they shall be set in arrays. Until when they come, He will say: Did you reject my signs while you could not encompass them in knowledge? Or what was it that you did?} (Holy Quran 27:83-84) Imam al-Sadiq (as) said: “The Signs are the Commander of the Believers (as) and the Imams (as) (after him)… and this is about al-Raj’a.” – Bihar alAnwar by AlMajlisi, v53, p53, Hadith #30

Allah promises to help the messengers when they return to this world

From Jamil ibn Daraj, he said: “I said to Imam al Sadiq (as) about the word of Allah the Almighty the Glorious:

{Surely, we shall help our messengers and the believers both in this world and on the day when the witnesses rise.} (Holy Quran 40:51)

He (as) said: By Allah this will be in al Raj’a (the Return).

Do you not know that many messengers were not helped in this world and were killed, and Imams were killed and were not helped, so that will be in al Raj’a.”

I said: {listen for the day when the caller will call from a nearby place. On the day when they will hear the shout, in truth that day they will emerge.} (Holy Quran 50:41, 42)

Imam (as) said: “That is al Raj’a (the Return)”

– Mukhtasar Basa’ir alDarajat p18-19

A crowd from every nation

From Mufaddal, he narrated that Abi Abdillah (as) about the word of Allah the Almighty:

{On that day we shall gather a crowd from every nation} (Holy Quran 27:83), said:

“There is no one from the believers who were killed except they return to the world and die, and do not return except the ones who have reached the epitome of Faith, and the one who have reached the epitome of disbelief.”

– Tafsir Qomi v2 p131, Bihar alAnwar v53 p53

Imam Ali mentions the raj’a in a supplication

The Commander of the Believers Imam Ali (as) said: “…then He created them from a sperm and they were nothing, is a proof of their return as a new creation after perishing, as He created them the first time.” – Dua’ of The Commander of the Believers (as) in glorifying Allah and praising Him, Al-Sahifa Al’Alawiyya

the dead ones return to defy the oppressors

Imam Ali (as) said: “Astonishment and all astonishment is between Jamadi and Rajab.”
So a man stood up and said: O Commander of the believers, what is this astonishing matter which you are still being astonished by?

So he pbuh said: May your mother mourn over you! And what matter is more astonishing than dead ones striking every enemy of Allah and His Messenger and his Ahlul Bayt!

And this is the interpretation of this verse:

{O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry. They have despaired of the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of the companions of the graves} [Holy Qur’an 60:13]”

– Bihar Al-Anwar Volume 53, Page 60, Hadith 48
