Taipei earthquake
Taipei, Taiwan felt tremors caused by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake located just off the coast of Taitung County at 8:22 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
The bureau explained how the epicenter was located at sea, 62.3 kilometers north-northeast of the Taitung County government complex, at a depth of 34.5 km. The highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was recorded in Taitung county, where the quake measured 4 — classified as “moderate” — on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, signified by the swaying of buildings and heavy furniture moving.
The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in several areas in central and southern Taiwan, regions such as Nantou County, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
North Island, New Zealand quake
In tandem there was a a similar magnitude event in a separate incident but operating in a relatively similar geographical zone. GeoNet detected a 5.1 earthquake off the coast of Ōpōtiki at 3.44pm this afternoon. The earthquake was reported to be 30km west of Te Kaha at a depth of 56km. The shaking caused by the earthquake was only moderate with 1,700 people in and around Ōpōtiki reported feeling the quake, as of 4.15pm. Most described the shaking as light or weak, but other felt moderate shaking and two reported “extreme” shaking.
GeoNet’s website stated the quake may have also been felt in Gisborne, Matawai, Murupara, Rotorua and Tauranga.
