A new spin on COVID-19
Prevalence of the new strain
It has shown up in at least 74 countries and 47 USD states and it is now estimated by CDC that 4%of Americans with Covid have infections caused by BA.2. In 10 countries it has already become dominant including Denmark, China and Philippines. Not to be too alarmist though at this stage in some nations such as South Africa and UK where BA.2 has gained a foothold, hospitalisations are actually declining.
Studies reveal how BA.2 can copy itself in cells more quickly than its predecessor BA.1. It is also better able to cause cells to clump together and these become factories to churn out more copies. In an experiment mice with BA.2 got sicker and had worse lung infections than those with BA.1. It is also more able to break through antibodies of people vaccinated against Covid-19.
One hope seems to be that those with the Omicron strain seem to have a degree of protection against the BA.2 strain. The truth remains there is a constant inner battle raging on our immune system to cope with the increasing mutations against the evolution of the virus.
“What we will ultimately want is to have the host be ahead of the virus. In other words, our immunity is a
step ahead of the next variant that comes out, and I don’t know that we’re quite there yet,” she said. Deborah Fuller, a virologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Our future remains unpredictable and the risks are still off the scale so we must do all that we can to help protect ourselves and that of our communities. On a more reflective spiritual level we should seek within ourselves to question what is really taking place and if this is not actually a sign for us to reach out to reinforce human values at every level.
