Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) is the reincarnation of Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh). What do the narrations of the Ahlulbayt (pbut) say about this?
The sayings of the Ahlulbayt (pbut) have mentioned in various ways that Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh) returns in the End Times, with his companions (pbut). He (pbuh) comes back to take revenge from the oppressors and tyrants, he will be victorious and will rule for a long time.
Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) came forth and said he is ‘Ahmad’ mentioned in the Will of Prophet Muhammad (pbuhahf), and that he is the first of the Twelve Mahdis, and the Messenger of Imam Muhammad Al-Mahdi (pbuhahf), the Twelfth Imam.
Could this mean that Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip), the first of the Mahdis, is Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh)?
We know that Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) has revealed that this is, in fact, true.
In the words of Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip),
“I am Al-Hussain,
the carrier of the sword of my Grandfather Ali ibn Abi Talib, Zhul Fiqar (his sword),
and the victorious with the sword,
and the avenger of the Ahlulbayt (pbut) and the Imams and the prophets and messengers,
the one who asks for the blood of prophets, vicegerents and messengers.
I am Ahmad Ismael.”
Many narrations of the Ahlulbayt (pbut) speak about this great matter.
Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh): “The first one who the earth will split for and he comes back to the physical world is Al-Hussain ibn Ali (pbut), and the return is not a general one, but it is a special one, nobody comes back except the ones who have reached the epitome of faith, and the ones who have reached the epitome of disbelief.”
– Mukhtasar Basa’er Al-Darajat, Al-Hassan Al-Helli, 1st ed., p.24
Aba Abdillah (pbuh) said: “… and indeed Al-Hussain (pbuh) read his scroll which he was given, and it was interpreted for him what will come and what will remain, and there remained some things in it which did not take place. So he went out to fight. And those things which remained [and did not take place] was that the Angels had asked Allah for permission that they may give Al-Hussain (pbuh) victory, so He (SWT) granted them permission. So the Angels remained preparing for the fight and getting ready for that, until he was killed. So they descended when his time had already passed and he (pbuh) was killed. So the Angels said: O Lord, You allowed us to descend and you gave us the permission to give him victory. So we descended but, You had already taken him? So Allah The Blessed, The Exalted, inspired to them: Stay committed/stick to his dome until you see that he emerged, then give him victory, and cry over him and over what you missed from giving him victory. And you have been specialised by giving him victory and crying over him. So the Angels cried seeking closeness (to Allah) and grieving over what they missed from giving victory to Al-Hussain (pbuh). So when Al-Hussain (pbuh) emerges, they will be from his Ansar (supporters)”.

-Mukhtasar Basair Al-Darajat, Al-Hassan Al-Helli, 1st ed., p.178
From Aba Abdillah Al-Sadiq (pbuh): “Verily, the first to return to this world is Al-Hussain son of Ali (pbuh) and his companions, and Yazeed son of Muawiya and his companions. So he will kill them, an eye for an eye. Then Aba Abdillah (pbuh) recited: ‘Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.’ (Holy Quran, Al-Isra’ verse 6)
– Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.53, p.76, hadith 78
Imam Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (pbuh) said:
Verily, Al-Hussain (pbuh) said to his companions: “Glad tidings to you of Paradise, for by Allah we shall remain for as long as Allah wills after what takes place upon us. Then Allah will bring us and you out until our Qa’im appears, so He shall take revenge from the oppressors, and you and I will watch them in chains and shackles and the [different] types of torment!”
– Maqtal Imam Al-Hussain a.s., Abdel Razzak Al-Moqarram, 1st ed., p.215
Burayd Al-Ijli said that Aba Abdillah (pbuh) said in a long hadith:
“Verily, Allah promised Al-Hussain (pbuh) that He will return him to the world so that he himself may take revenge from the ones who did that to him.”
– Al-Iqath Min Al-Hoja’a BelBorhan A’la Al-Raja’a, Al-Hurr Al-Amili, 1st ed., p.254, hadith 21 (Online book: p.228)
Ahmed ibn Uqba narrated from his father, he said: “We asked Aba Abdillah (pbuh) about the Raja’a, is it true?” So he (pbuh) said: “Yes.” So it was said to him: “Who is the first to come out? He said: “Al-Hussain comes out upon the trace of the Qa’im (pbuh).” So I said: “And are all the people with him? He said: “No, rather it will be as Allah (SWT) mentioned in His book, “The Day the Horn shall be blown so you will come forth in groups.” (Holy Quran, An-Naba’ verse 18), one group of people after the other.”
–Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.53, p.103, hadith 130
Then Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said, “The matter of the Qa’im and his rise is to Allah alone.”
I said “O Master, does he not have signs?”
Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said, “Rather he has various signs…And Al-Hussain enters Halwan…”
– Al-Haft Al-Shareef, Al Mufaddal ibn Umar Al-Ja’fi, door 65
From Jaber Aljo’fy: I heard Aba Ja’far pbuh saying: “Then Al-Montassir (The Victor), shall emerge to the Dunya (this worldly life), and he is Al-Hussain (pbuh), avenging his blood, and the blood of his companions.”
–Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.53, p.104, hadith 130
–Mukhtasar Basair Al-Darajat, Al-Hassan Al-Helli, 1st ed., p.49
Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said: “The first one to return to the world is Al-Hussain ibn Ali (pbuh) so he rules until his eyebrows sag over his eyes due to old age.”
– Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.53, p.46, hadith 19
Imam Al-Baqir (pbuh) said: “The first to return to you is Al-Hussain (pbuh) and he will rule until his eyebrows sag over his eyes due to old age.”
–Mukhtasar Basair Al-Darajat, Al-Hassan Al-Helli, 1st ed., p.27-28
Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) has revealed that the ‘People of the Cloak’ from the Family of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuhahf) incarnated as the Twelve Imams in various rounds, one after the other.
He, (fhip), also revealed that Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh) reincarnated as Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) as well. This means that Imam Al-Hussain and Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbut) are actually one soul returning in different bodies.
There are multiple narrations that point to this knowledge.
We’ve read the narrations that refer to the rulership of Al-Hussain (pbuh) in the End Times, and how he will rule for a long time until his eyebrows sag. Other narrations have mentioned that Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) saves the nation and fills the earth with justice and equity.
Abi Sa’eed Al-Mada’ini narrated: I heard Aba Ja’far (pbuh) saying: “Verily, Allah saved The Children of Israel from its pharaoh by Musa son of Imran. And verily, Allah will save this nation from its Pharaoh by a man who has the same name (as Musa)”.
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.44-45, hadith 27 (Online book: p.68-69)
Ismail ibn Mansour Al-Zubali said: I heard an old man from Azra’at, whom 120 years have passed on him, saying: I heard Imam Ali (pbuh) from the Minbar of Kufa saying: “It’s as if I see the son of Hamida* had filled it with justice and equity, just as it had been filled with injustice and oppression.” So a man stood up and asked: “Is he from you or from other than you?” He (pbuh) said: “No, rather he is a man from me”.
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.51, hadith 40 (Online book: p.75)
*Hamida is the mother of Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh)
Sarim ibn Ilwan Al-Goukhi said: I, Mufaddal, Yunis ibn Thobyan, Al-Faydh ibn Al-Mukhtar and Al-Qasim entered upon Aba Abdillah (pbuh) and he had with him his son Ismail … [until he said] so Al-Faydh said: “We see that he is the Companion of this matter after you (meaning Ismail).” So Aba Abdillah (pbuh) said: “No by Allah, he is not”. Then he said: “This one is more deserving than that,” and he pointed to Aba Al-Hassan [Musa] (pbuh) while he was sleeping, so Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) embraced him and he slept on his chest. When he woke up, Aba Abdillah (pbuh) took his hand and said: “This, by Allah, is my son truly. He, by Allah, fills it with justice and equity just as it was filled with injustice and tyranny.”
So Al-Qasim said to him a second time: “May I be your ransom, this one?” So he (pbuh) said: “Yes, by Allah! This son of mine does not exit this world until Allah fills the Earth, by him, with justice and equity just as it was filled with injustice and tyranny”. He swore by that thrice.
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.49-50, hadith 37 (Online book: p.73-74)
However, this didn’t happen and Imam Musa Al-Kadhim never ruled and was killed in prison. So then, how was it prophesied that he (pbuh) would fill the earth with justice and equity?
Muhammad ibn Marawan said that a man once said to Aba Ja’far (pbuh): “May I be your ransom, they say that The Commander of the Believers (pbuh) said on the Minbar of Kufa: ‘Even if one day remains in this world, Allah will prolong this day so that He sends a man from me who fills it with justice and equity just as it was filled with injustice and tyranny’.” So Aba Ja’far (pbuh) said: “Yes”. So the man said: “Are you him?” He (pbuh) said: “No, that one was named the ‘Splitter of the sea’ (that is, Musa)”.
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.46, hadith 30 (Online book: p.70)
Aba Al-Waleed Al-Tara’efy said: I was at Aba Abdillah (pbuh) one night when he called his servant saying: “Go and call my son, the master”. So his servant said to him: “Who is he?” So he (pbuh) said: “So-and-so meaning Aba Al-Hassan [Musa] (pbuh)” … [until he said]: Then he patted his hand on my arm and said: “O Aba Al-Waleed! It is as if I see the Black Banners fluttering above the head of this one sitting there, and with him his companions demolish the mountains of iron, they do not come across anything except that they demolish it”.
Then I said: “May I be your ransom, this one?” He (pbuh) said: “Yes this one, O Aba Al-Waleed! He fills it with justice and equity just as it was filled with injustice and tyranny. He walks among the people of the Qibla the same way Ali ibn Abi Taleb did, he kills the enemies of Allah until Allah is pleased.
I said: “May I be your ransom, this one?” He (pbuh) said: “This one.” Then he said: “So follow him, obey him, believe him and give him the contentment yourself. Verily, you shall be with him God willing”.
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.48, hadith 35 (Online book: p.72)
So, if only one day remains of the world, ‘Musa’ from the sons of Imam Ali (pbuh) will be sent by Allah to fill the earth with justice and equity. It is also well known in the narrations that the Black Banners appear at the End Times with the Mahdi. Thus, Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) will return in the End Times to fulfil this prophecy.
Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) was the only one to reveal the link between the narrations that mention the return of Al-Hussain and Musa Al-Kadhim (pbut), clarifying they are in fact one soul. That soul is the first to return to this world, it will take revenge from the oppressors and will be victorious, it will rule for a long time filling the earth with peace, justice and equity.
The return of this soul is not how most people think, believing that Al-Hussain (pbuh) will return coming out of the grave! Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip) clarified that the return of the souls occurs in new bodies.
Saleh ibn Sahl narrated that Aba Abdillah (pbuh) said … [until he said] regarding the verse {Then We gave back to you the return victory over them and We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower} (The Holy Quran, Al-Isra’ verse 6) He (pbuh) said:
“The emergence of Al-Hussain (pbuh) in the Return, with seventy men from his companions who were killed with him. On them will be the golden helmets, each helmet has two faces, and which lead the people to the fact that Al-Hussain had emerged among his companions, so that the believers may not doubt him and so that they know that he is not a Dajjal nor a Shaytan, the Imam who is among the people on that day …”
– Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.51, p.56, hadith 46
This narration points to a very interesting point. If Al-Hussain (pbuh) will come out of the grave, as they claim, then why would the believers doubt him or think he is a ‘Dajjal’ (deceiver) or a ‘Shaytan’ (devil)? If they see the event happening with their own eyes and the grave is opening up, there shouldn’t be a shadow of doubt!
The truth and reality is that he (pbuh) returns in a new body that they do not recognize, and will doubt him thinking that he is a deceiver.
Imam Al-Baqir (pbuh) said concerning a man, from his sons, who comes out in the End Times: “He has two names, a name which is hidden and a name which is announced, as for the one which is hidden it is Ahmad, as for the one which is announced it is Muhammad.”
– Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v. 51, p. 35, hadith 4
The reality is that the two names, Ahmad and Muhammad are referring to two people. The apparent Proof of God (or ‘Hujjah’) is the 12th Imam Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan (pbuhahf) however, there is another hidden name… Ahmad. Who is this hidden Proof of God?
Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) said in a long hadith: “… Verily, Allah does not leave His earth empty of a ‘Hujjah’ (vicegerent), not even for a blink of an eye! Either a hidden (inner) Hujjah or an apparent one. I am the apparent Hujjah of Allah, and His hidden Hujjah. I am the Hujjah of Allah on the Day of the Known Time, and I am the fulfiller, the speaker on behalf of the Messenger. During this time, now, I am Musa, son of Ja’far …”
– Bihar Al-Anwar, Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi, 3rd ed., v.48, p.41, hadith 16
– Manaqib Aal Abi Taleb, Ibn Shahr Ashoub, 1st ed., v.3, p.419
Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) in the above narration elaborates further and answers all questions. He was an ‘apparent Hujja’ in his time as Musa, son of Ja’far (pbut). However, he is clearly stating that he is the ‘hidden Hujja’ on the Day of the Known Time, meaning in the End Times.
He also mentioned: “During this time, now, I am Musa, son of Ja’far” this clearly means that he will have a different name. What was Musa’s other name?
Abdullah Al-Rigani said: I was at Aba Abdillah’s (pbuh) when the Righteous Servant* (pbuh) [meaning Musa] entered upon him, so Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh) said to him: “O Ahmad, do this and that.” So I said: “May I be your ransom, his name is so-and-so”. So he (pbuh) said: “Rather, his name is Ahmad and Muhammad.”
Then he (pbuh) said to me: “O Abdullah, the Companion of this matter will be taken away then imprisoned, and his imprisonment will be long, so if they approach him he will make Dua’ [supplication] by the Greater Name of Allah, so Allah will save him from between their hands.”
– Al-Ghayba, Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan ‘Al-Toosi’, 3rd ed., p.57, hadith 51 (Online book: p.81)
* ‘The Righteous Servant’ is one of the titles of Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) because of his abundant acts of worship and night worship.
Clearly, Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (pbuh) called his son Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh) by the name ‘Ahmad’ for a reason, only to be revealed by Musa himself in the End Times.
Musa Al-Kadhim is the hidden vicegerent of God on the ‘Day of the Known Time’ and he is ‘Ahmad’, the ‘hidden name’ that was mentioned in the Will of the Prophet (pbuhahf) and was safeguarded for its rightful owner.
Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh), who incarnated as Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (pbuh), has returned today as Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip), the only one who claimed to be ‘Ahmad’ in the Will of the Prophet (pbuhahf).
He announced that he is the Messenger of Imam Al-Mahdi (pbuhahf), and he himself prophesied this when he said: “I am the fulfiller, the speaker on behalf of the Messenger”. Today, we know that Imam Al-Mahdi is, in reality, the return of the Prophet (pbuhahf).
Now, it is evident that Imam Al-Hussain, Imam Musa Al-Kadhim and the first Mahdi Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (fhip), are all the same soul that returned in different incarnations.
