Islamic Narrations About Characters of the Return

What do the various scriptures tell us about the characters who return in the End Times?

There are various scriptures and sayings of the prophets and Imams (pbut) that refer to the return of well known characters who come back to support the Saviour of Mankind.

From the Ahadith of the Ahlulbayt PBUT

THE PEOPLE REJECT THE RETURN OF SOULS

“Sereen said: I was at Abi Abdillah’s (meaning Imam Al-Sadiq) when he (pbuh) said to me:

“What do the people say about this verse: {And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that Allah will not resurrect one who dies} [Holy Quran, An-Nahl verse 38]?”

I said: They say there is no resurrection, no judgement and no gathering.”

So he (pbuh) said: “By Allah, they have lied. Verily this shall be when the Qa’im emerges and the ones returning return with him. So the people who disagree with you say ‘O Shia, your country has appeared and this is from your lies, you say so-and-so returned. No by Allah! Allah does not resurrect the one who dies.’ Have you not seen that they swore by Allah their strongest oaths?! The polytheists used to glorify Al-Lat and Al-Uzza so much that they would not swear by other than them!”

So Allah said, “…Yes, it is a true promise binding upon Him but most of the people do not know. It is so He will make clear to them that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars. Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, “Be,” and it is.} [Holy Quran, An-Nahl verses 38-40]

THE RETURN OF MUHAMMAD, ALI, AL-HASSAN AND AL-HUSSAIN WITH THE ARCHANGELS DURING THE TIME OF THE MAHDI (PBUT)

Imam Al-Hussain (pbuh) said: “So be glad, by Allah if they kill us, verily we will return amongst our Prophet. Then I will remain as long as Allah wills, I will be the first for whom the earth splits open, so I emerge with the emergence of the Prince of the Believers and the rise of our Qa’im and the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah. Then a delegation from heaven, from Allah, will descend upon me, they have never descended to the earth before, and Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and angel soldiers will descend to me. And Muhammad, Ali, and me and my brother will descend, and all whom Allah blessed with carrying loads of the Lord, horses of light that no creature has ever ridden. Then Muhammad will shake his banner and push it to our Qa’im with his sword, then we shall remain after that as long as Allah wills.”

THE RETURN OF ISMAIL, SON OF EZEKIEL, WITH IMAM HUSSAIN PBUH

Burayd Al-Ijli narrated:

I said to Abi Abdillah (pbuh), “O son of the Messenger of Allah (pbuhahf), inform me of Ismail whom Allah mentioned in His book where He says: {And mention in the Book, Ismail. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.} [Holy Quran, Mariam verse 54].

Was he Ismail son of Ibrahim (pbuh)? The people claim that he is Ismail son of Ibrahim”.

So he (pbuh) said: “Ismail died before Ibrahim, and indeed Ibrahim was a vicegerent (Hujjah) of Allah, a Qa’im (a Riser) and a Companion of a Jurisprudence, so to whom was Ismail sent then?”

So I said: “So who was he, may I be your ransom?”

He said: “That was Ismail, son of the Prophet Ezekiel (pbuh). Allah sent him to his people, but they belied him, killed him, and they flayed the skin off his face. Allah was angry for him, from them, so He sent to him Satata’eel, the angel of Punishment. He said to him: “O Ismail, I am Satata’eel the angel of punishment. The Glorified Lord has sent me to you, in order to punish your people with various punishments as you will”. So Ismail said to him: “I do not have a need for this, O Satata’eel.”

So Allah inspired to him: “So what is your need, O Ismail?”

So Ismail said: “O Lord, You have taken the covenant of the Lordship to Yourself, and of the Prophethood to Muhammad, and of the Wilayah to his Vicegerents, and You have informed your creation of what his nation will do to Al-Hussain son of Ali (pbut) after their Prophet, and You have promised Al-Hussain that You will return him to this world so that he takes revenge by himself from those who did that to him. So my need from You, O Lord, is that you return me to this world, so that I take revenge from those who did that to me, as You will return Al-Hussain.”

So Allah promised that to Ismail son of Ezekiel, so he returns with Al-Hussain son of Ali (pbut).”
