Reincarnation and the Return

Learn more about the prophecies of reincarnation and the return.

When Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh) was asked about reincarnation of the soul, he replied: ”…It is true. The soul never dies.”

Reincarnation is the rebirth of an individual’s soul which persists after bodily death. While belief in reincarnation is most characteristic of South Asian and East Asian traditions, it also appears in the religious and philosophical thought of some ancient Middle Eastern religions, such as Manichaeism, as well as in the Abrahamic religions.

Among the ancient Greeks, it was believed by followers of the Orphic religion that a soul lives beyond bodily death and is later reincarnated in a human or other mammalian body, until it receives release from the cycle of birth and death and regains its former pure state.

Plato (pbuh) believed in an immortal soul that participates in frequent incarnations. In his book ‘Phaedo’ he wrote:

“I am confident in the belief that there truly is such a thing as living again, and that the living spring from the dead, and that the souls of the dead are in existence, and that the good souls have a better portion than the evil.”

– Plato, Phaedo

Pythagoras (pbuh) believed in reincarnation and claimed to remember previous incarnations.

Jains believe in reincarnation, too. Their souls, which are believed to be a unique substance in the universe, take different living forms in the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. This cycle has been going on forever, the universe has no beginning or end, it has always been and always will be.

After his enlightenment, Buddha (pbuh) could remember his previous lives. Some of these previous lives are recorded in the Buddhist scripture, the Jataka.

Krishna (pbuh) explains that all beings are the union of an eternal self and a body… One is only reborn at all because the eternal self clings to various “gunas” (quality, peculiarity, attribute, property) from past lives; He compares the way the eternal self sheds bodies to the way people shed old clothing.

The old testament of the Bible contains many verses that prove the prophets and messengers accepted reincarnation as a reality.  For example, Job said the following:

“Naked I came from my Mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there.”

– Holy Bible, Job 1:21

How could a man return to his mother’s womb except through rebirth in another body?

It was known amongst the Jews that Elijah was prophesied to “return” and pave the way for the messiah.  For example, these verses from Isaiah and Malachi, point to the return of Elijah:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert. A highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted. And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;”

– Holy Bible, Isaiah 40:3–4

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

– Holy Bible, Malachi 4:5-6

In The gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel appears to Zachariah and tells him his wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son named John, who will go before the messiah “in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’” Luke 1:17

And Jesus (pbuh) later confirmed that the reincarnation of Elijah was, in fact, John the Baptist.

“They asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

– Holy Bible, Mark 9:11–13

The belief in reincarnation was also spread by Jesus (pbuh). Just contemplate the following statement recorded in the Bible:

“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again… he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

– Holy Bible, John 3:3

Another verse in the Bible shows clearly that the disciples of Jesus believed in reincarnation and the concept of karma, that your deeds will affect your future incarnations. The disciples and Jesus encountered a man who had be blind since birth.  The disciples asked Jesus:

“Did this man sin or his parents that he was born blind?”

– Holy Bible, John 9:2

Considering that the man had been blind since birth, the only way his own sins could have caused the blindness was the sins he accumulated in a previous incarnation.

The theme of reincarnation also appears in the scriptures of the Holy Quran:

“Nay; they wondered that a warner should have come to them from among themselves. The disbelievers said: ‘This indeed is a strange thing. What! When we are dead and reduced to mere dust, (shall we be raised to life)? Such a return is far-fetched.’”
-Holy Quran 50:2-3

“How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you (back) to life, and then to Him you will be returned.”
– Holy Quran 2:28

There are also many narrations from the Family of Muhammad (pbut) which prove the existence of the idea of reincarnation, for example:

“Then Allah made Iblis and his seed wear the bodies just the same as He made Adam and his seed wear bodies. And from there they resembled the humans (in body) and their maskh (transformated/ reincarnated form became hidden) when they all wore the bodies. And a man might meet you in his body while you think he is a human, but in reality he is a monkey or pig or dog or bear. From there they resembled the people and from there the believer cannot be distinguished from the disbeliever as far as their incarnated forms, meaning their bodies they are wearing (human bodies). And so when they were installed, and the sons of Adam did not know they were from the seed of Iblis, they had thought they were rather like themselves, so they told them how Allah created Adam and his seed.”

– Al Haft Al Shareef, Door #10

The times we are living in right now are very unique, as we are living in the End Times. Everywhere on the world there is political, religious and moral corruption, terrorism, mind control, and even the nature is in turmoil; earthquakes, mass animal deaths, blood rivers, wars… The signs are everywhere. In the Islamic traditions the Family of Muhammad (pbut) has mentioned the Raja – a time where the best of the believers and the worst of the disbelievers will return for a final confrontation, where ultimately the believers will be victorious over the disbelievers. This time is now!

According to the narrations, the companions of the Riser will be reincarnations of the prophets and messengers:

“Al-Qaim will come forth from the back of the Kufa with twenty seven persons, fifteen from them are from the people of Musa (Moses) (pbuh), who guided to the truth and acted according to the Justice, and seven are from the people of the Cave and Joshua ibn Nun, and Salman and Abu Dujana Ansari and Meghdad and Malik al-Ahstar are present too, who will become Ansars and Rulers between the hands of the Qaim (pbuh).”

Imam Al-Sadiq (pbuh), Al-Irshad by Shaykh Mufid volume 2 page 386

These are some of the characters whose return Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan has announced through Aba Sadiq (Abdullah Hashem): John the Baptist, Zachariah, Joseph, David, Solomon, Jesus, Amid, Imran, Bhudda, Malik Al-Ashtar, Moses, Isaac, Jonah, Aaron, Adam, Daniel, Salman Al-Farisi, Abel, Ishmael, Abu Dujana, and many many more.

Some people might be surprised about the characters that are to return in the time of the Riser, just as the related confirmation of the concept of reincarnation might astonish one. But let us remember that the Riser is said to restore the truth of religion, which will not be easy on the people, just like many narrations about the unexpected restoration of the religion explain.

For centuries, people have misinterpreted the Raja to mean the resurrection of physical bodies from the grave. But Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan has revealed that this is a return not of the body, but of the soul through reincarnation, through rebirth of the soul in a new body. And he himself is one of the returned, for he is the incarnation of Imam Al-Hussein (pbuh), son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (pbuh):

“I am Al-Hussein, the carrier of the sword of my grandfather Ali Ibn Abi Talib, Zhul Fiqar, and the victorious with the sword, and the avenger of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them) and the Imams and the Prophets and Messengers, the one who asks for the blood of prophets, vicegerents and messengers. I am Ahmed Ismael.”

Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh)

In the Book of Monotheism Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh) says:

“So the one who comes in the shades of clouds is Muhammad in the world of Raja (Return) and with him shall be the People of his House (Ahlul Bayt) and some of the Prophets. And it is known that Muhammad is the one shaded with the clouds, and there were glad tidings given with this description in the Torah and the Gospels about the messenger Muhammad and the Riser (Qaim) from the family of Muhammad.”

Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh)

So Mohammed will come back in the time of Raja which is now as Imam Al-Mahdi!

Furthermore, he said:

“The Raja world is not a different world than this world. We are now in the Raja and in every age there was a Raja in it. And Raja has not stopped since. But this time it is particularly special and will not repeat again, because all the prophets and messengers and vicegerents and pure ones are gathered now.”

Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh)

This means that the reincarnation of prophets and messengers is not a new concept. However, the fact that all of them are back at the same time is an exceptional and exceedingly great matter!

And it is not only the Imams, the prophets and the messengers, but it is also the angels who will return in this blessed time:

“On any condition, O people of Iraq, verily my father sent me to the people of the earth and he has begun with you and with the mother of cities, Al Najaf, and verily I am supported by Gabriel, Michael, Israfil and the Kingdom of the Heavens. And many who accepted me with truth, the veil was lifted from them and their vision today is iron.”

Imam Ahmed Al-Hassan (pbuh)

He also said: “I declare the beginning of the revolution of the prophets and vicegerents (pbut) in the name of God and His blessings; a revolution against all aspects of oppression, injustice and corruption on earth. And I will not rest and I will not settle until I fill the earth with justice and equity by the power of God, just as it has been filled with oppression and injustice by the followers of Satan (may Allah curse him), or I will turn the earth red with my blood, for death (by getting killed) is for us a norm and God honours us with martyrdom. And today we call upon every Muslim and every person who is jealous over the religion of God, to give us victory. Is there anyone to help us? Is there anyone who would defend the progeny of the messenger of God (may peace be upon him and his family)? Where are the friends of God? Where are the supporters of God? Where are those who seek revenge for the blood of the one killed in Karbala?”
